Art Basel is a for-profit, privately owned and managed, international art fair staged annually in Basel, Switzerland; Miami Beach, Florida; and Hong Kong, selling the works of established and emerging artists. During the Miami Beach edition of the art fair, From December 5-8, visitors can expect over 268 galleries from 35 countries showcasing works of usually no less than 4,000 artists, including paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, film, video, and digital art. Visitors can find works ranging from editioned pieces by young artists to museum-caliber masterpieces. A sister fair of the original Art Basel, founded in Basel, Switzerland in 1970, the Miami Beach edition has been an annual fixture in early December since 2002. Literally speaking, Art Basel refers to the singular fair held at the Miami Beach Convention Center, but in a more figurative sense, Art Basel engages numerous venues throughout the city hosting satellite fairs, parties and events in a week that’s become known as Miami Art Week.
At Art Basel Miami Beach 2019, the exhibition space at the Miami Beach Convention Center is divided into sectors: Galleries, Nova, Positions, Edition, Kabinett, Survey, Meridians and Magazines. The sectors divide the fair into separate curatorial spaces. Galleries serve as the centerpiece of the show. Nova exhibits new, cutting-edge works from emerging artists and galleries. Meridians curated by Mexico City-based Magali Arriola presents works including large-scale sculptures, installations and performance art. Kabinett focuses on a body of work by a single artist or a themed group exhibition. Survey is dedicated to art history projects ranging from solo shows to thematic exhibitions. There are also a series of conversations throughout the week ranging from panel discussions to lectures. A Public sector is sited at Collins Park in collaboration with The Bass and features sculptures and site-specific installations. The Public sector is free and open to the public.
Art Basel’s Conversations series offers panel discussions on topics shaping the global contemporary art scene. In brief, topics titles on the program for discussion from December 5-7 include Artists’ Influencers, A Global Art Market in a Nationalist World? How to Reach New Collectors, New Ways of Seeing – Photography Now, Confronting Climate Change Denial, Art and Social Media – a Stormy Relationship? Art Basel covers artworks in various media. Among them are Installation, Mixed Media, Other Materials, Painting, Performance, Photography, Prints and Multiples, Sculpture, Video/Film, Work on Paper. Within the category of motion picture and/or digital media, Miami based Filmgate will offer two virtual reality projects and interactive sound installation. The Nucleo Concordia exhibit is an interactive sensorial spatial sound installation with original audio sequences, produced with analog synthesizers exclusively created for the piece. The two VR projects are Runnin’, an interactive VR dance party, driven by Reggie Watts and John Tejada’s music track “Runnin’,” and ‘BeachBody Bros,’ a four-minute musical journey depicting a world of pure muscle and intense strength produced through Oculus technology. There are also video/film exhibits, notably Carolyn Lazard’s ‘A Recipe for Disaster, 2018’ (27 min); Fang Lu (photo above) with ‘Cinema 2013’ (19 min); Daniele Puppi offers ‘American Song, 2019’ (3 min).
Art Basel has initiatives that concentrate on the broader art world. They are three main initiatives: Art Basel Cities, BMW Art Journey, and Crowdfunding. Art Basel Cities is a project between Art Basel and cities worldwide to create cultural events and programming throughout the year. BMW Art Journey Award is a grant that supports emerging creatives and enables them to go on an artistic journey of their own definition. The Crowdfunding Initiative is a partnership between Kickstarter and Art Basel to provide visibility and generate support for projects from non-profit organizations around the world. Another aspect of the Art Basel initiative, The Art Market, is a global art market analysis covering all aspects of the international market and highlights the most important developments in the previous year. The first report was published in 2017.
