Operating annually from the seaside resort of Cannes, MIDEM is an annual music market, workshop and conference that is dedicated to discover rising musical talents, while also helping the music industry and its partners develop business and creativity by looking to connect key players of the music ecosystem. Every year MIDEM generates fresh perspectives through event highlights that help it stay on the leading edge as a music industry resource. This year, Spotlight keynotes at 2019 MIDEM will be delivered by Rebeca León, CEO and Co-Founder, Lionfish Entertainment and Manager of Latin superstars J Balvin, Juanes and upcoming Latin music performer Rosalía. This year MIDEM will host the Jamaican artists’ collective, Inna de Yard, celebrating the work of reggae legends Ken Boothe, Cedric Myton, Winston McAnuff, Kiddus I, and to host the premiere of music documentary, Inna de Yard, attended by the film’s stars. The documentary was made following the success of the artists’ 2017 release, The Soul of Jamaica, when the musicians decided to record another album, a compilation of their most iconic tracks. Other highlights for MIDEM in 2019 are interesting as well. The MIDEM 2019 Artist Ambassador and Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti, will share his vision on empowering the new generation of Nigerian artists and music executives, in a scheduled session on June 4. MIDEM and Esports BAR are collaborating to offer a program focused on the growing business opportunities in Esports and music. MidemLab, in its 12 edition, will showcase the most promising international music tech startups that offer innovative solutions that can guide the music industry to develop new consumer experiences.
Despite visitors having a multitude of activities to attend, MIDEM does have several individual activity areas that form the core of its offerings and can help organize a visit and aid decisions on what to focus on. MIDEM Keynotes, is a chance to hear from international music industry players and their ideas on where the music business is heading. MIDEM Summits, has its own focus on Streaming, Legal (in association with IAEL), Live (in association with Pollstar) and Copyright Summits structured to form the basis of a briefing on key industry topics. Music Lab, is a platform on which Midemlab Start-Up Competition finalists and selected innovative companies showcase solutions to take a business venture forward. Worldwide Village, are sessions on how to develop a business internationally by finding the opportunities in music markets.
As part of MIDEM’s focus on the essential relationship between music and screen, the Inna De Yard premiere will complement the Film/TV Music conference track within the programme. Mainstay event MIDEM at Night, will be back presenting acts like MIDEM Artist Accelerator, Taiwan Beats, British Music Night, Sacem African Night, performing at the new MIDEM Beach. New Europe Market (NEM) is an annual TV industry conference, market and screenings event held in Dubrovnik, run by the Croatian company Mediavision Ltd. The focal idea behind the event is the creation of a platform where media, telecommunications, and marketing professionals can share their knowledge and experience during the conference and networking events. Running June 10-13, the conference is aimed toward FTAs, Pay-TV channels, cable operators, satellite operators, IPTV, production, distribution and technology companies, media and marketing agencies and other specialists connected with the TV industry. NEM focuses on the CEE region, but the event’s attendees come from all over the world. NEM 2019 has aggregated into its agenda stalwarts from the TV industry to be included in its presentations, including Sony Pictures Entertainment, Eutelsat, JW Player, Viacom International Media Networks, AMC Networks International, Global Agency, Bitmovin, NBC Universal, Viasat World, all3media international, Warner Bros. and many others. The annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival staged on roughly 700 acres of farm in Manchester, had its origins in 2002 with a focus on jam bands and folk rock. In the years since, the four-day music and art festival, which typically starts on the second Thursday in June, now programs a diverse array of musical styles including indie rock, classic rock, world music, hip hop, jazz, and more. Musical acts are known to play from around noon until 15:00 or even later. Unlike Coachella that happens earlier in the spring, Bonnaroo seems to place more emphasis on the (fine) art and environmentalism aspect of its festival with more and diverse engagement for its visitors to take part in. Within all the activity tents that make up the festival, The Silent Disco tent could be the most endearing. In the Silent Disco, each person entering is given a set of headphones that sync with the DJ and the music. Everyone is listening to the same song through the headphones (and dancing or grooving) while appearing from the outside to be dancing to no music at all. The exact opening date of this year’s Bonnaroo Festival is June 13.
