NATPE is a U.S-based global content association and professional membership organization dedicated to shaping the future of content through year-round marketplaces and conferences, screenings, awards, and networking events. In 2020 at the Miami Beach convention, the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) has planned a slate of programming dedicated to all aspects of unscripted programming, underscoring the organization’s full commitment to that area of the international content industry. This year’s conference sessions will reflect six areas of specialization: Content Evolution, Streaming Plus, Brands x Content, Unscripted, International Focus, Station Group Summit. Brandi Rhodes, Chief Brand Officer of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), will present a keynote opening the Brands x Content segment of NATPE Miami. She will also welcome special guest and wrestling impresario, Tony Schiavone, for a one-on-one Q&A session. NATPE Miami hosts an opening night part at the Fountainebleau. The World Screen and TV LATINA Premio Icono Award Presentation will be the final scheduled closing event for NATPE Miami 2020.

Paul Buccieri, A+E Networks, Doris Kearns Goodwin, historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and Dan Abrams, web entrepreneur and host of LIVE PD will open NATPE Miami 2020 with a keynote fireside chat. The chat will specifically start the unscripted track at this year’s NATPE, which will happen, January 21-23. European Radio Show – Salon de la Radio in Paris

Coming at a time of the middle of the radio season, 2020’s European Radio Show – Salon de la Radio, is set for three days of activities beginning January 23, offering a program of presentations, lectures, meetings, surprises, workshops and ceremonies in celebration of radio. Admission remains free for industry professionals for every aspect of the show that will be based within Paris’ Parc de la Villette grounds, and whose theme this year is “Solid Radio. Liquid Audio.” Germany and Austria will be in the 2020 spotlight with a dedicated pavilion. An additional German-themed treat to the convention commences every evening at 19:00, the “Biergarten” a beer bar opens to visitors. A new innovation this year will be that the usual Podcast&Co area has expanded to become the POD.Village, with a new sound stage for conferences and technical presentations. The DAB+ pavilion will again be a meeting point for all players in digital terrestrial radio around the WorldDAB. The convention will again put on the International Radio of the Year contest, in which any global radio or webradio station broadcasting 24/24 7/7 with DJ’s and having an official website with an active stream can apply to compete in at this link.

The return of the Rebounce Audio hackathon, a 24-hour Hackaton organized in the midst of the Radio and Digital Audio Show, has as its objective ways to create new uses that will drive new formats to win new audiences while offering its visitors a live immersive experience with multidisciplinary teams versed in the ins and outs of tomorrow’s radio and digital audio world that includes new formats, new writing and storytelling and music. The Muzicenter Discovery, which features a lounge and showcase area available for artists, has been newly extended. In this space, the Muzicenter Meetup will also offer face-to-face meetings between labels and program directors. A thematic area, The Sales House, with a designated private area and conference room, will be used to host cross-industry meetings to encourage interactions about the latest issues. On the current agenda: the national convention of the Indes Radios, the National Radio Day of the RCF network, and the 90th anniversary of “Music & the Spoken Word” presented by Bonneville Distribution.

Sundance Film Festival

Sundance in Park City opens its 11-day annual film festival with a screening of US Documentary from Netflix, directed by Nicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht. At the 2020 Sundance Festival, films will come in categories for U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition, Premieres, Documentary Premieres, Spotlight, NEXT, Midnight, Indie Episodic, Shorts, Special Events, From the Collection, and Kids. The New Frontier section that will contain Films and Performances – a selection of cinematic visions by artists looking to stretch boundaries, Exhibitions – stories derived through an amalgam of film, art and digital technology that offer up the next vista of storytelling. And in the Offscreen section, panels with a variety of guests and topics that invite audiences into the discussion on storytelling will be offered. A music program of live performances takes place throughout the festival. And Partner Activities, programming from the Sundance partner community, open to all Festival credential holders and the general public as space allows, comprise Partner Panels, Partner Music and Partner Events.

New for 2020, visitors will be able to interact with the Biodigital Theatre, a cutting-edge presentation space that will feature a rotating schedule of large scale VR theatrical works including a feature-length livestream game telecast. There will be lounge space for credential holders to meet and relax before and after experiencing the programs. Sundance Festival is based in Park City and administered by the Sundance Institute, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the discovery and development of independent artists and audiences. Traditionally happening in the same town (Park City), and with slightly overlapping dates as the Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance Film Festival opens a day after Sundance (January 24) but closes at the month’s end rather than to crawl into February as Sundance does. Established in 1995, Slamdance had a role in fostering recognizable talent in independent filmmaking. In addition to the Russo Brothers, notable Slamdance alumni include (in part): Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity), Bong Joon Ho (Okja), Lena Dunham (Girls), Ari Aster (Hereditary), Gina Prince-Blythewood (Shots Fired), and Sean Baker (The Florida Project). In addition to the Festival, Slamdance serves emerging artists and a growing community with several year-round initiatives. These include the Slamdance Screenplay Competition, its educational program Slamdance Polytechnic, DIG showcase of Digital Interactive and Gaming art, distribution efforts through Slamdance Presents, worldwide screening series Slamdance on the Road, and LA screening series Slamdance Cinema Club. Box Office Mojo reports alumni who first showed their work at Slamdance have earned over $17 billion at the Box Office to date. Realscreen Summit

The Realscreen Summit is a global market and conference for the business of unscripted and non-fiction entertainment. Principally, it serves the information needs of content creators, distributors, agents, commissioners and multi-platform broadcasters of unscripted and factual entertainment programming. Launched in 1999, it starts its second year in the city of New Orleans after relocating from Washington D.C. With four days of activities that begin January 27, this 22nd edition includes the annual celebration of the Realscreen Awards dedicated to honoring the best programs in competition, lifestyle, reality, non-fiction, and digital content. After a summit tour and continental breakfast, Jacqueline Parkes, Chief Marketing Officer and EVP, Digital Studios-MTV, will be part of a Keynote Conversation to discuss how she and her team are building fan communities around new MTV series and brands.

A significant feature of Realscreen Summit for 2020 will be Realscreen Summit’s live international pitch competition – Summit Showdown – that will award two $20,000 development deals at the 2020 competition, and a new participating network onboard. In 2020 supporting networks will be A&E and HGTV, who will each provide one $20,000 development deal to a winning project for their network. The Summit Showdown is presented in partnership with West One Music Group, who will provide the Grand Prize winners of the Summit Showdown an exclusive custom theme song and blanket library package for their show. In addition to creating the title track for the pilot, West One will provide music direction and full access to their library of more than 55,000 tracks.

Realscreen Summit will offer a variety of themed networking occasions. For starters, there is the A+E Networks Opening Night Party set for the end of the opening day of the Summit. Programming execs will take one-on-one three-minute Speed Pitching sessions. Separately there are Pitching Partners opportunities to pitch to production companies and studios who are looking for great ideas and partnerships for their next significant project. Cocktails With… comprises meetings over drinks with representatives from the attending non-fiction networks. Coffee + Commissioners are an informal networking opportunity for delegates to meet with commissioning and development execs over coffee and continental breakfast. Attending the RealXchange provides a showcase to share project concepts, make connections, and arrange valuable networking meetings. Realscreen’s “Meet a Mentor” series is structured to offer delegates unfettered access to producers of unscripted programming production companies.
